Welcoming Students Back With Joy
The closure of school and navigation of COVID-19 felt traumatic for students and adults alike. As they reopen school doors, leaders are focusing on how to welcome students back with joy and celebration (while also implementing new safety policies).

Cudahy, WI Superintendent Dr. Tina Owen-Moore shared that school leaders focused on making sure “every building was a model of care and creativity, as teachers found ways to bring some joy and normalcy to this very unusual time.” Masks were emblazoned with district logos, and teachers used creative set-ups to engage younger learners in socially distanced ways.
Local Parent Organizations have gotten into the game, inviting students and families to offer messages of excitement and support. Students in Arlington, MA wrote chalk messages to returning staff.

Students at Mission Grammar School (Roxbury, MA) in Michael Morris’ second grade classroom incorporated a twist on their self-portraits this school year by drawing their self-portraits wearing masks. This engaging and fun activity helps to normalize mask-wearing and also helps to develop a positive, fun perception of masks.

Many shared other ways they made the first day of school feel warm and exciting. They are sharing strategies, ranging from video welcomes, to bubble machines and accordions at the front doors, to kick-off community meetings on playgrounds.
